In early 2015, two separate groups of Leatherfolk petitioned National Leather Association-International to open a chapter in San Antonio. They were asked to combine efforts and NLA-SA was granted incorporation as a non-profit in May 2015. The first elections were held and the first board took office in June 2015.
NLA-SA began working with other local groups, including the Alamo City Leather and Fetish Weekend, founded by Steven Parker (now Steve Winsor). The Alamo City Leather contests were a part of ACLFW. After Steven Parker moved out of state, ACLFW went on hiatus. In late 2018, NLA-SA was given permission, along with the local chapter of Team Friendly, to take over both the Leather contests and the ACLFW conference. However, due to world-wide events, that effort was delayed until May 2022, when the Leather contests were able to be held again.
Over the years, NLA-SA has continued to work with many other local groups and organizations such as Temple of Flesh, San Antonio Kennel Klub, Renegade Bears, The Lair, The Royal, Sovereign and Imperial Court of the Alamo Empire, San Antonio Primals, the Alamo Abbey of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and many other special interest groups to foster greater understanding and acceptance of both the Leather lifestyle and of BDSM and LGBTQIAA+ interests, in general
